breathing training
I think by now it is very obvious that I am a serious lover of contrabass clarinet. Yes, in fact it is one of the instruments that I can play for a whole day without feeling tired. Ignore the fact that it need very much air amount.
Contraalto and contrabass clarinet. Should have asked someone to lay down to compare.
Yes I have to admit that my breathing was very bad when I first joined NUSWS. I cannot play a flute note stablely for more than 10 seconds, and will even feel uncomfortable playing cor anglais, like how the contrabassoon.
I always tell others that one of the reasons I play other instruments is to train my breathing. Some say "ok, go ahead", some say "it just doesn't make sense".
If now i am still like the day I first joined NUSWS, I am sure that I can't even make the contrabass clarinet sound. But now, I can hold a lower note for more than 5 seconds (don't think it's easy), and 15 seconds for running notes (I just don't know why running notes are a lot easier to sustain).
I don't think anyone can deny that my breathing has improved a lot. My stamina has increased also. A quick fact: At usual band practice, when others start running short of stamina, I still feel like nothing, seriously. Yesterday, Our second last piece, Elizabeth, everyone was almost exhausted, I still can play every note in full energy, and in the end I just felt a bit tired, though no problem to play the same piece again.
Not trying to show off here, just want to prove that playing other instruments really helps breathing a lot. Believe it or not, it works for me.

For you, you think playing other instruments help. So for you maybe playing instruments like clarinet/lower reeds help. Can I pose you a question?
What if those from lower winds play flute(or others)? Do you think it will "improve" their breathing?
Does it really mean playing other instruments help? OR are there other elements involved?
Being still energetic towards the end of the practice doesnt mean anything. I believe even when the others are exhausted, they can still play "EVERY" note too.
i think it will help if you play other instrument, from flute to lower wind, or from lower wind to flute.
what i think is, when you have used to playing your own instrument, you know how to play it with least amount of air. but when you play other instrument you are not familiar with, you have to blow more air amount that needed. that's what i said, training.
Maybe it's just work for me. When i try to train breathing on flute, i can't really train much, because i already know how to cheat air on flute, so i can't really improve breathing much and fast if i practise only on flute.
and remember that i am not physically as strong as you, so you have to consider a weaker person's view.
I dunno if I really understand what you mean by cheat air on flute..
Physically strong?.. U mean those physically stronger can "breathe better"?
Pardon me but I jus think your claims are strange and I don't know how much lessons you had with the new tutor but you might want to credit some of your improvements to her.
