conversation
This is one conversation that will happen between two typical Malaysian guy (Butterworth). My translation is in red.
khaiyuen says:
Hoi (Hello man, how are you?)JTea Penny says:
Hamilan (I am fine. Anything to find me?)
That's the usual way to greet for us. Simple enough, isn't it?
Then after some long time crapping, suddenly something like this appears:
JTea Penny says:
apala...
khaiyuen says:
apa apala
JTea Penny says:
tada apala
JTea Penny says:
hanya apala
khaiyuen says:
o
Above is totally meaningless. So no need to think much.
JTea Penny says:
lama tak guna bahasa, macam tai (Too long time never use this language, already like s**t)
khaiyuen says:
o (yes, I totally agree with you)
khaiyuen says:
guna lama pun macam tai (even if using this for very long time, it's still like s**t)
JTea Penny says:
siapa? (who are you talking about?)
khaiyuen says:
lu lah (of course is you)
khaiyuen says:
wahaha
JTea Penny says:
wa tada la, wa mia bahasa sangat keat one... (no, not for me. My ability on this language is very strong)
khaiyuen says:
yalah (okay)
khaiyuen says:
lu kata keat, keat lo (if you say you are strong in this language, fine, you strong)
JTea Penny says:
keat sampai macam tai (i am so strong, until almost like s**t)
khaiyuen says:
yalah (yes, i agree)
khaiyuen says:
semua orang pun macam tai (everyone in this world looks like s**t also)
JTea Penny says:
orang macam tai, macam mana kerja arr? (if everyone looks like s**t, how are they suppose to work?)
khaiyuen says:
kerja macam tai la (of course, work like s**t, so simple)
JTea Penny says:
liao produce tai? (then, produce s**t?)
khaiyuen says:
boleh juga (if that is possible, i think is okay)
khaiyuen says:
tai sangat baik untuk kesihatan (anyway, s**t is very good for you health)
JTea Penny says:
lu ada makan tak? (do you eat?)
khaiyuen says:
tak (no, i don't eat)
khaiyuen says:
wa sangat sihat liao (i am healthy enough, no need to eat that)
JTea Penny says:
sihat kalau tak makan will become tak sihat (even if you are healthy, if you don't eat it, you will become unhealthy also)
khaiyuen says:
tak sihat baru makan la (then I start eat it only when I am unhealthy)
JTea Penny says:
so bila lu pi esplanade besok a? (so, when will you go to esplanade to watch the show tomorrow?)
khaiyuen says:
pukul tiga lo (around 3pm)
khaiyuen says:
tak perlu wang punya (it's free, no need to pay for ticket)
JTea Penny says:
siok lo (so good, you must be very happy)
JTea Penny says:
NUS sponsor arr? (are you sponsored by NUS?)
khaiyuen says:
siao ah (are you numb head?)
khaiyuen says:
tentu bukan lah (Of course not)
khaiyuen says:
esplanade sponsor la (is sponsored by esplanade)
JTea Penny says:
mengapa esplanade sponsor lu semua? (why is the esplanade so kind to sponsor you all?)
khaiyuen says:
kerana wa tak tau lo (well, I also don't know the reason)
khaiyuen says:
mau tak? (do you want to come here to watch with me?)
JTea Penny says:
mau apa? (what do you mean?)
JTea Penny says:
tadak masa (I want to, but I don't have time to spend)
khaiyuen says:
o (too bad)
khaiyuen says:
tak da masa pi cari la (if you don't have time, you have to seek for it)
JTea Penny says:
kalau adak masa and ada duit, pasti pi (If I have the time and money to spend, I will surely go)
khaiyuen says:
o (good then)
khaiyuen says:
lu mai cari wa, wa belanja lu pi esplanade (never mind the money, you just come here to visit me, and I will treat you to a concert at Esplanade)
JTea Penny says:
bukan tak perlu duit ar? (I thought you said that the concert is free?)
khaiyuen says:
aiyo... (please think more carefully)
khaiyuen says:
lain kali perlu liao la (when you come next time, the concert will not be free anymore)
JTea Penny says:
mahai tak? (is it expensive then)
khaiyuen says:
lu kata leh (what do you think?)
khaiyuen says:
tengok lu mau apa la.. ada mahai, ada tak mahai (it depends on what concert that you want to watch. There are some concerts that are expensive, some are not so expensive)
JTea Penny says:
wa mau macam tour de japon punya ei (but I want to watch some concert like the tour de japan)
khaiyuen says:
apa tu (what is that?)
khaiyuen says:
tak tau la (I'm sorry, but I know nothing about that)
khaiyuen says:
lu mai saja, wa belanja lu la (anyway, as long as you willing to come, I will treat you the concert)
khaiyuen says:
wa pi mandi (OK, enough for today's chat, I have to go to take my shower now)
And thus ended my conversation.
Isn't it amazing that we can use some simple words that can express a lot of meaning? And please do not forget the magic word, "o". It has appeared 4 times in this conversation, and every time it will give different meaning.
See, if we really want to say something that is comparable to top secret, we have the language.
That's the advantage of learning one more language. Maybe two more languages.
